Log and answer a pet request

Log a tenant’s request to keep a pet, see the date your written answer is due, and record your answer or a request for more information.

Updated 18 October 2026

When a tenant asks to keep a pet, log it on the property’s page under Pet requests, and the app shows the date your written answer is due.

  1. Open the property from Properties, then open Pet requests.
  2. Tap Log Pet Request.
  3. Under What the tenant asked to keep, write what they asked for, in their words if you have them.
  4. Enter Asked on, the date of the request.
  5. Tap Log Request. The app says the date the answer is due by.

While a request waits, it shows near the top of the property’s page, with Record Your Answer, which opens Pet requests.

What the law says

  • Consent can’t be unreasonably refused, and you give or refuse it in writing on or before the 28th day after the request.
  • The day after the request is day 1, so a request made on 1 March must be answered by 29 March.
  • Silence past the date isn’t consent: a pet isn’t allowed just because the date passed. For what the tenant can do then, ask a solicitor or Citizens Advice.

Ask for more information

  1. On the request, tap Record Further Information.
  2. Enter You asked the tenant for more information on.
  3. When it arrives, enter Further information you asked for, received on. Leave it blank until then.
  4. Tap Save Dates.

If you reasonably ask for it on or before the 28th day, the date can move. The answer is then due by the later of the 28th day and the 7th day after it arrives. None is due if it never comes. Asked for later, it moves nothing, and the form says so.

Record your answer

  1. Give the tenant your answer in writing. The app records it; it doesn’t send it.
  2. On the request, tap Record as Allowed or Record Refusal.
  3. Enter Answered in writing on.
  4. For a refusal, write Your reason, in your own words. The app never suggests one.
  5. Tap Record as Allowed or Record Refusal again.

The request then shows as allowed or refused, with its date. Each step is recorded in the tenancy’s evidence file.
